Viva Cristo Rey ! |
The Conflict Between the State and the Church
Since the beginning of Christianity in Mexico, there have always been problems between the Church and the State ranging from reprisals like those that occurred in New Spain (the old name of the Mexican Republic) to the larger rebellions and deaths like those that occurred in the Cristiada. The final and most violent chapter in the long history of conflict in Mexico between the Church and the State began in 1925. The armed movement of the Cristeros was the saddest and most dramatic, that lasted three years, from 1926-1929. The depth of the tragedy convinced both the State and the Church to put an end to the confrontation that went far beyond the ends pursued by both institutions: peace, development and justice that permit all men to live in freedom according to their conscience. The Cristiada (name given to the armed revolt) began when the then President, Plutarco Elias Calles, by national decree enforced Articles 3, 5, 24, 27 and 130 of the Mexican Constitution that attacked the freedoms and rights of religious groups to teach, associate and own property. Elias Calles, however, enforced the articles to extremes to the extent that many Catholic Churches were sacked and destroyed and if the faithful disobeyed, orders were given to have them arrested and imprisoned. The Government’s intention was to eradicate the Church and it did everything possible, even ordering the assassination of priests and exploding a bomb in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe trying to destroy the cloth the holds the sacred image of the Blessed Virgin. By the grace of God, the bomb did not cause much damage. On July 3, 1926, the Secretary of the Interior put into effect a new law that reformed the Penal Code of the District and its Federal territories relating to offenses against public policy and those against the Federation in matters of worship and private education. This was in part, the initial cause of the Cristera Revolution. It’s logical then that the Mexican people, the large majority Catholic, were not going to allow this type of abuse; above all when their Church was being attacked and destroyed. Their Faith was being attacked. The name Cristiada was chosen by the voice of the people. The Cristiada, or the dramatic and moving story of a people who felt wronged because of their Faith challenged an iron-willed government and an army that had all the advantages, except one. Were they willing to sacrifice for their Faith? An unfair fight, a biblical fight. David vs. Goliath. It was sad and desolate time for our people: silenced bells, no more visits to the Blessed Sacrament, happiness in the Church now turned into fear and dread, no more baptisms, no more Masses, no more marriages blessed by the hand of God, no more confessions, no more blessings for the living and the sick, no more anything having to do with Church! Everyone cast adrift without being able to talk with God in his Holy house! The Cristero Movement The Mexican people decided to take up arms and fight for their Faith. The armed conflict took place all over the Country. There were uprisings in the north of the Republic, from Bacum in Sonora to Concepcion del Oro in Zacatecas and Parras and Saltillo in Coahuila. In the south, from Tapachula in Chiapas to the states of Guerrero, Puebla, Oaxaca and on a lesser scale in a few other states. The strongest rebellions, however, were in the states of Jalisco, Michoacan, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and Queretaro. It’s worth mentioning that the ACJM (Catholic Association of Mexican Youth) was founded in 1913 and in 1917 it was solid and strong. The ACJM had a fundamental role in the Cristera War. It was necessary to recruit soldiers and leaders to defend God and Country. No one really wanted to take up arms, but they needed to. And great martyrs and heroes did emerge from their numbers. To mention a few, Blessed Salvador, Manuel and David, Acejotaemeros ( name given to members of the ACJM) from Zacatecas, the servants of God, Anacleto Gonzalez Flores, brothers Jorge and Ramon Vargas Gonzalez, Luis Padilla, Miguel Gomez Loza, Luis Magaña Servin, Ezequiel Huerta, Salvador Huerta and so many other young men who decided to give their life for their God and their Country. There were also other great leaders like Rene Capistran Garza (National President of the ACJM), Manuel Bonilla, Heriberto Navarrete and all the other acejotaemeros that set out to prove that God had sent the ACJM. The Cristero movement was not only about taking up arms and fighting against the army that went around apprehending priests; there were also large demonstrations, processions and pilgrimages throughout the country in support of the cristeros. Some of the demonstrations grew to thousands of people but in the opinion of the government, it was “only a reaction of some Indians who were misguided by the clergy and who were submersed in fanaticism”. It must be remembered that many people could not stop going to Mass just because. So, Mass was secretly celebrated in hidden places throughout the mountains and hills. If the peope were discovered by the army they were executed right there on the spot. In some cases, the people fought back and died with dignity for God. In the beginning, the Cristero movement took place only in small and disperse areas. As time went on, and as the government reprisals grew stronger, so did the movement. Since it had turned into an armed movement, the Cristeros had neither the equipment or the preparation needed to help them face the Army. But time helped organize them. On July 31, 1926 the government wanted to takeover “the Church of the 7 Princes”. When the people found out, there became infuriated and began to riot. Two soldiers who were scouting the church were killed. In retaliation, the government ordered that anyone found there be shot. The Mexican people always knew that the government would intervene and take the churches to destroy them. They prepared themselves, took up arms and moved in to the churches to live there. Some protected the inside while others protected the outside. When the army arrived and found resistance, the soldiers who were better armed, simply opened fire on the people. Such was the case that occurred at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Guadalajara on August 3, 1926. When the news of this spread and rumors that the government would push on into Oaxaca, the people prepared themselves. They watched over the town and moved into the church. When a group of federal soldiers arrived they were immediately mobbed by the town. Shortly thereafter, a heavily armed group of 250 soldiers returned the attack. The people defended themselves the best they could but the army eventually took the town. The following day all those who were detained were taken to army headquarters, defeated, but with shouts of “Viva Cristo Rey” (“Long Live Christ the King”). During the month of August, there were a total of 6 armed uprisings, one in Acatzingo, Puebla and another near Sayula in Oaxaca. Both of these were large in scale but not as successful as the bloody events in Acámbaro and Tlaxiaco. There was also the August 2, 1926 uprising in Cocula and the August 4 armed conflict in Sahuayo, Michoacán. The most important battle occurred in Valparaiso, Zacatecas on the night of August 14, 1926 when Don Pedro Quintanar, an individual of great importance during the Cristera struggle, appeared on the scene with the initial charge of freeing a detained priest. Quintanar, who had been a Captain in the defense maneuvers against Pancho Villa, joined the fight to help his many friends. He prepared the uprising that Aurelio Aceved and his friends planned since the beginning of August. The government had mobilized more quickly once they became aware that Quintanar was now part of the rebellion. Mobilizations occurred in Peñitas and Peñas Blancas. Quintanar entered into combat on August 29 in Huejuquilla el Alto (Jalisco). Thus began the first organized Cristera battle which ended in triumph and shouts of “Viva Cristo Rey!” Everything that was happening was a great affront for the Government. How was possible that a simple band of fanatic rebels could beat the government? Well they did, and all thanks to God’s great help. Besides Cocula, the movement that began in the State of Jalisco began to gain ground in other towns: Tlajomulco, Etzatlán, Belén, Refugio, Zapotlanejo, Ciudad Guzmán, Chapala, Atengo, Ayutla and Tecolotlán. All responded to the fight with bravery and determination. The months of November and December were characterized by peaceful demonstrations and a continuous denial by the government such as that shown by the remark made by Vizcaíno in Francisco El Grande: “No military problems affect the Republic today…There are bands of fanatics who have started only rebel adventures”. The government’s reaction had only provoked more rebellion. And when there were more uprisings between August and December in 20 of the 118 municipalities in Jalisco, the military General in charge of the region declared to the press: “no military problem exists in Jalisco”. It was true, there were no rebellions in Jalisco that were of any concern for the government. Those that occurred in Zacatecas, Durango, and Guanajuato were a different story. When the government saw that the Cristero Movement continued to grow, it increased its campaign of apprehending priests and the faithful and increased the number of deaths, assassinations and attempts on the faithful and the church. Each atrocity made the Cristeros more determined and their numbers grew. With time, they became more organized and a bit more armed, but always with the conviction of defending their Faith, their love of God and their love of the Virgin of Guadalupe with the cry “Viva Cristo Rey y la Virgen de Guadalupe!”. Information and communication among the diverse Cristero groups was scare and slow since there was a lot of censorship in the small amount of media that existed. Eventually a magazine came out that was unique and published exclusively for the Cristero Movement and the Catholic Church: David The following Corrido (Ballad) “Mexicans to the Fight” was written for the Cristera War. It was written to the tune of the Mexican National Anthem. (Remember that a corrido is a way of expressing the feelings of the people that shape the history that they are living at a particular moment.) (Chorus) Mexicans, the armies of a furious Hell were unleashed upon this Country, With the Queen that Heaven gave to us we’ll defeat all of Hell. I Oh Mother, Oh Mother! Your children promise to defend with courage and daring The divine treasure of your image that gracious Heaven gave to us. Although Hell and all its hosts fight to destroy our sacred churches those fierce tyrants will never rip Jesus from our soul (Chorus) II If for defending your honor and your glory The tyrant takes us to our execution They will never, Mother, obtain victory Because our faith gives us breath; With your invincible protection and love, We will not fear the martyrdom of heavy chains, Nor jail, hunger or pain, Oh Virgin Morena! (Chorus) III Put on Oh Queen the olive branch crown That the divine finger of heaven showed this Country As its eternal destiny. And if your enemy the CROM (Regional Confederation of Mexican Labor) Infests this land with its spirit Send, Oh Invincible Heavenly Mother, The armies that Christ formed. (Chorus) Mexicans, a furious Avernus sent forth its army from Sonora . With the Queen that Heaven gave us, we’ll defeat all of Hell. There are other corridos such as: Corrido of Martín Díaz, Corrido of the Battles of San Julián, Corrido of Victoriano Ramírez “El Catorce”, Corrido of Father Mendoza, Corrido of the People’s Union or of Quirino Navarro, Corrido of Valentín de la Sierra, Corrido of López and Castañón, Corrido of the taking of Mezquitic or of Father Montoya among many others. We should feel proud of all those people who offered up their lives and their love for the Church that we have today. I therefore ask you to reflect on this episode in our history that as Mexicans and Catholics we should know and understand. This is not all of the information about the Cristero War. Much more exists. But as we said, there has been little investigation and information spread about so there isn´t much published material. This effort was undertaken to provide some information about the history of the Mexican Catholic Church. Part 2 talks about how many Mexicans and Acejotaemeros died during the Cristera War crying out in their moment of agony and death, Viva Cristo Rey! (Long Live Christ the King!) |
